Album Of The Year 2017
Captain Wilberforce - 'Black Sky Thinking'
Originally selected as our #AlbumOfTheMonth for April 2017.
Taking influence from the last fifty years of pop, Captain Wilberforce has been crafting instantly memorable pop songs for more than ten years. Music has been likened to that of The Beatles, Squeeze and Crowded House.
Initially the musical venture was pretty much a solo project with debut album 'Mindfilming' being released in 2006. This was followed in 2008 by second release 'Everybody Loves A Villain'. Third album 'Ghost Written Confessions' hit the world in 2011. All of the albums received critical acclaim but with limited commercial success.
Following a six year break, Captain Wilberforce returned in March 2017 with fourth album 'Black Sky Thinking'. For this album, Simon is joined by new bandmates Carl Banks (drums), Rob Simpson (guitar) and Massimiliano Borghesi (bass).
Featuring the Captain Wilberforce hallmarks of great songwriting, melodies and harmonies, the new collection of twelve songs is stunning. Particular current favourites are 'Lazarus', 'King Of Indecision' and the album's title track. Timeless, inventive and peerless songcraft.
'Black Sky Thinking' is a truly wonderful album that deserves the attention and recognition of a much wider audience!
