Album Of The Month - June 2015
Paul Liddell - 'Andelain'
Sunderland based singer songwriter Paul Liddell released his fourth studio album 'Andelain' on 24th April 2015.
This album is the follow up to 'Milestones And Motorways' (2011) and combines recent single releases (remastered and in some cases re-recorded) with some previously unreleased tracks.
A Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for the pressing of the CD hit its target in under two hours.
Fans of the accomplished and imaginative guitarist will be familiar with the trademark live sampling, guitar percussion and layered vocal harmonies on display throughout this collection of songs. What is also evident, however, is that there is an element of experimentation with the overall sound of the album.
In a recent interview Paul said “I have experimented more and more every time I go in the studio to record, and although parts of this album sound quite accessible and easy, there is definitely an element of deliberate experimentation. It is something I’m keen to do more of.”
'Andelain' has been described elsewhere as a modern and ambitious indie-pop/post-folk album, with proud proggy tendencies and very catchy tunes.
Cannot argue with that neat summation but must add that it is a mightily impressive collection of killer tunes with top notch songwriting, musicianship and production values.
'Andelain' is highly recommended listening!
