Maria Silker - 'Little Did I Know'
Maria Silker is a singer songwriter based in Liverpool. Strongly influenced by the musical heritage of her home town she grew up listening to a wide range of music including The Beatles, Simon & Garfunkel, Carole King, James Taylor and Barbara Dickson.
Debut album 'Tearing At The Surface' was released in 2012. The collection of melodic songs with strongly reflective lyrics mirrors a variety of styles including country, folk, jazz and musical theatre.
Follow up album 'Little Did I Know' was released in March 2016. Featuring all original compositions the new album is more focused on folk and country influences than the debut. Produced by Clive Gregson (Any Trouble, Richard Thompson, Nanci Griffiths), the album features an array of very experienced and talented musicians. These include John Wood (Squeeze, Pink Floyd, Nick Drake, Sandy Denny), Mark Griffiths (The Shadows), Martin Hughes (Any Trouble) and Kate St John (Van Morrison, Marianne Faithful).
In a recent interview Maria gave some insight about the background of songs on the new album:
"Some of the songs are inspired by travel such as 'The Lady Of Guadalupe' and 'Cape Town'. A few years ago I was really lucky to have a job that took me around the world and I worked in Africa and Mexico in 2012 - so that has inspired me. I think there is also a theme in the songs of the passing of time and doing the things we are meant to do in life. 'The Boat', 'Lost Time', 'The Alchemist' and 'The Mirror' have these thoughts and ideas in them. April Day was inspired by the poem 'The Wasteland' by TS Eliot. I was fascinated by this poem. I did it for A level and went back to it later in life thinking that I may understand it more. I didn’t, but the song came after reading it again."
'Little Did I Know' is a wonderful and timeless album. Echoing the golden era of singer songwriters of the late 60s / early 70s, and particularly the Laurel Canyon music scene, this album is highly recommended and essential listening!
