Tom Kay - 'Wither & Bloom' Album
Singer songwriter Tom Kay contacted us recently about his new album 'Wither & Bloom'. This is what he had to say about the upcoming release:
"My new album is called 'Wither & Bloom' and will be available on Blank Canvas Records from 3rd February 2017.
This new album is the follow up to 'From The Outside In' which was released in March 2016. Throughout the last 18 months or so I've focused on my work as a solo artist. The release of the last album was pretty successful, a couple of the singles from the album gained airplay around the U.K. and in the U.S. and it managed to get to number 32 in the iTunes Charts which is all down to my wonderful audience, they made that happen and I'm very grateful.
I played some shows around the U.K. to promote the last album and in doing so I became inspired to write more songs. I wrote a whole bunch of tracks and by summer I had enough for another album. Some would say I'm eager and impatient but I just don't see the point in hanging around when there are songs that I'm proud of waiting to get out there. Plus I knew I wanted to release something in 2017.
I approached Pat Dooner and Carl Conway-Davis of The Broken Orchestra to produce the new album. The songs beckoned me to try a different approach and go in a different direction and they both work very differently to how I have worked before so the process was very fresh and rewarding. And if anything it was a good laugh! We started work towards the end of July 2016. I had a few things I needed to get out of the way before we could fully throw ourselves into it. We picked things up again in the September and worked on it until December.
'Wither & Bloom' focuses on a few different topics lyrically. The title track is about going through changes, growing and blossoming and finding yourself again after a period of uncertainty and asking the question of 'do we all get a second chance?' Hence the lyrics 'And lately I've been thinking of letting it go, irrational thinking won't leave me alone, if my time is coming then make it soon, isn't there time for us all to wither and bloom?'
The album is a bit of a departure from the last in a sense that there is no acoustic guitar on this album and it focuses more on blending my songwriting with ambient sounds. For me, I think it's my best so far. But so it should be. I think everyone has an aim as an artist to get better and to try new things and they'd be kidding themselves otherwise".
